In anticipation of a special Foggy Bottom West End Village guided tour of the historically accurate Negro Motorist Green Book exhibition at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library on November 14, we hope you can join us for a special viewing of the 2018 Academy Award nominated film Green Book. The Green Book was an annual guidebook for African-American road trippers founded and published by New York City mailman Victor Hugo Green from 1936 to 1967. In this movie, Dr. Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation. This embellished portrayal of their relationship while travelling through the Jim Crow South will provide some background for our upcoming tour.
