Born in 1908 in Anglės Spain, artist Remedios Varo was creatively influenced by her father, who was an engineer and who taught her to draw; and by her rebellion against strict catholic schooling. The imaginative artist went on to art school and aspired for political change during her Surrealist phase. She moved to Paris during the time of the Spanish Civil War and World War 2. She was intrigued by magic, and painted about various occult themes. Varo was also interested in psychoanalysis, as she studied the work and theories of both Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. When her paintings were not enough to subsist on, she kept herself afloat with commercial illustration.
Varos’s 1947 painting(see above) is titled Gypsy and Harlequin. Right click on the image to open it in a new tab to see it fully. Fantastical, ethereal, symbolic, and mysterious, the painting tells a story, yet remains open to interpretation.
Let us gather to discuss Remedios Varo, at our next art introspection on Monday October 17th, at 2pm.
